Wrocław is a city with a rich medical tradition. The first hospital was founded in the 13th century. Medicine was first taught in 1745 by the establishment of the Collegium Medico-Chirurgicum. It was the first medical school in the city. Many famous doctors lived and worked in Wrocław, such as Alois Alzheimer - neurologist and psychiatrist, who presented his findings regarding degeneration of the brain cortex (Alzheimer's Disease), Robert Koch - creator of modern bacteriology (Nobel Prize in 1905), Paul Erlich - pioneer of present chemotherapy (Nobel Prize in 1908).
The process of teaching is realised by a team of highly qualified specialists. The Medical University also performs a wide range of scientific activities and provides the whole region of Lower Silesia with highly specialised medical care.
Describe of Wroclaw
Wroclaw Poland, the capital of Lower Silesia, is rapidly catching the attention of tourists and businessmen alike. It was once described as “the holy blossom of Europe, a beautiful gem among cities”, and has always been a bone of contention, changing hands many times throughout its long history. In the past, Wrocław has belonged to Poles, Czechs, Austrians, Hungarians and Germans. Settlers here have included Walloons, Jews, Italians and Ruthenians. The mixture of many different religions and cultures, while troublesome at times, has also contributed a lot to the city. Wrocław lies in the middle of the Silesian Lowland, where the Oder River branches out to form 12 islands. The city is spanned by more than 100 bridges. Seen from the deck of a tour boat, Wrocław looks like a city on the water.
The heart of Wrocław is the Market Square, one of the most beautiful and largest urban squares in Poland. As in centuries past, it is home to large banks, elegant stores and famous restaurants. Wrocław’s Market Square was built on the crossroads of important transport routes running from the Czech Republic in the south, to the north, and from Western Europe to the East. The wealth of Wrocław’s residents was built on international trade, and the city grew rich from the taxes flowing into its coffers. With over 20,000 residents in the 14th century, Wrocław was among the largest cities of Europe at the time. In 1387 it became a member of the Hanseatic league, the powerful union of northern German, Rheinland, Teutonic, Swedish and Polish towns, which monopolized northern European trade and became a political power. People come to Wrocław for more than just business. Kings, emperors and presidents have been guests at the Under the Golden Sun, Under the Seven Electors and Under the Blue Sun tenement houses located on the Market Square. They have received homage, held political negotiations and borrowed money from the city. Today their former residences are the most beautiful buildings in the Market Square, and the Town Hall is recognised as a gem of Gothic- Renaissance urban architecture.

History of Wroclaw Medical University
Medicine program
The Faculty of Medicine is the oldest and the largest faculty of Wroclaw Medical University. It was established on November 14, 1945, as one of six faculties of the University of Wroclaw and Technical University. The opening lecture was given by Ludwik Hirszfeld. The scientific staff consisted mainly of professors from the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv.
The Wroclaw Medical University was established in 1950, consisting of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy. Since then, 16,068 medical doctors and 4,715 dentists have graduated. On February 12, 1958, the first open heart surgery in Poland was carried out by prof. Wiktor Bross at the Faculty of Medicine, who also on March 31, 1966 performed the first kidney transplant from a living donor. These achievements were significant in European medicine. A great number of prominent scientists conducted research at the Faculty of Medicine, including the following professors: Ludwik Hirszfeld, Zygmunt Albert, Edward Szczeklik, Witold Orłowski, Stefan Ślopek, Hugon and Zofia Kowarzyk.
Two new faculties, the Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Training in 1992 and the Faculty of Dentistry in 2000, were created based on the organisational structure and lecturing staff of the Faculty of Medicine. After these changes, the Faculty of Medicine assumed more educational duties from the University. In 2002, the Faculty received the PE-EN ISO 9001 certificate for its educational and research programs in accordance with standards defined by the Polish Centre for Testing and Certification.
Dentistry programThe Dentistry Unit was established at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Wroclaw and Technical University in Wroclaw on April 13, 1947. In 1950, the school of dentistry became a part of the Wroclaw Medical University. The school consisted of four departments. In 1970–1980, academic dentistry in Wroclaw functioned as the Institute of Dentistry. In December 1981, the school of dentistry was reunited with the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty of Dentistry was established on November 16, 2000. Prominent Polish scientists conducted research in dentistry in Wrocław, including the following professors: Noemi Wigdorowicz-Makowerowa, Tadeusz Owiński, Adam Masztalerz, Stanisław Potoczek, Bogumił Płonka, Tadeusz Pawela, Ignacy Pietrzycki and many others. In 2003–2006, the scientific and training facilities were moved to a new building. The Faculty regained the right to issue degrees in dental medicine (in the last three years the Faculty has granted 26 degrees). The Faculty, as one of five in Poland, has received the longest possible accreditation from
the State Accreditation Committee. Today, it is one of three independent faculties of dentistry in Poland.
